Location search

Every location is normalised offline from GeoNames into English places with the structure City, Region, Country:

  • Munich, Bavaria, Germany (written "München, Bayern" by the source)
  • London, England, United Kingdom (UK regions are its countries)
  • Berlin, Germany, Hamburg, Germany, Vienna, Austria (city-states have no region)
  • New York City, New York, United States

location searches the raw text and the normalised names, so Munich, München and Bavaria all match. Namesakes are decided by the posting's own country signal (London, Ontario vs London, England); otherwise the larger place wins.

Be precise with quotes and the country: "Birmingham, England, United Kingdom". Several places: "United States" OR Canada. Boolean: location_advanced=Germany & !(Berlin | Munich).

Fields: locations_derived, cities_derived, counties_derived, regions_derived, countries_derived, country_codes_derived, timezones_derived, lats_derived, lngs_derived. has_no_location=true returns postings without a recognisable place.
